8, 8, I forget what is for
Here's wolf attempt #2. Quick-sketched last night in 2 minutes at the kitchen table, sitting next to my daughter (who was drawing a horse) and stealing her blue colored-pencil. This morning, I pumped up the contrast a bit in GIMP and layed in a a soft-focus background using the usually chicanery.

I know it's not winning any awards with the John Birch Society, but I think it's a big improvement over attempt #1. After scribbling the previous monstrosity, I realized I wasn't getting the canine leg-structure correct, at all. I should really sit down and look at some decent photo references, but it's fun seeing how good my mental image is without the cheat-codes.

Still more Husky than chessmaster, but closer---and probably good enough for amateur D&D art where the wolves are just there to make pull out your sword! We've left the Dark Woods too---scene veered to the Arctic on me. Probably because I just finished reading my freshly arrived copy of Melan's excellent From Beneath the Glacier. I am not the master of my own subconscious....and when it comes to sketching, I've learned it's better to just go with it.

Enjoy.

Oh! Almost forget. This is the biggest take-away for other aspiring DIY D&D artists out there (are there any out there reading this?). My daughter was taken aback because of how quickly I did it. They key was one of the tips from the Proko course. Don't focus on drawing outlines (e.g. the silhouette), quick-sketch the underlying 3D forms.

In this case, I used the bean method to start by drawing a blob (bean) for the ribcage and another blob (bean) for the pelvis/shanks. Seriously---just two lightly-drawn kidney beans. Then you think about where the appendage-bones attach, and rough that in. Add an oval for the head. The rest is just putting meat on for muscle, and shading the basic 3D forms---I'll post something about that some other day.

An example I made today showing my daughter the difference between how I always used to draw faces (left) focusing on "lines", and instead focusing on the underlying 3D forms and then shading (right). Lines as shadows, not containers.

twoface0.jpg

Funny thing was, when I went to take a picture of it with my phone, it was the left one the facial-recognition software grabbed for focus.

Also, using the "lines" method, eye have no sockets and noses are a PITA (a common stumbling-block I witness in OSR art).
Not so much anymore! ...assuming you think the right-hand one is better.

No joke. Every face I ever tried to draw before ended up looking similar to the one on the left. It's been liberating breaking that mold.

I scribbled in the surfer-necklace and GIMP-fuzzy background because the right-dude was giving me a serious Teen-Angst-Beach-Flick vibe.
(Jerk-face looks like he's pretty full of himself, too. Wouldn't seem so smug if he realized he has no nipples. Put a shirt on, bro!)

A concept sketch for what a Merrow (Aquatic Ogre, MM2) might look like for an upcoming K&KA product.
This is as far as I'm taking it, and the anatomy is weak, but I thought it might be worth a post.
My next iteration (if there is one) will be a slightly altered appearance.

can you get paid to listen to music

Should be playing D&D instead
Man, I love music, but I really wish there was a way I could earn money just by listening to it and without investment. Oh well, I guess there's no real solution out there.

I drew this one a few months ago for my campaign book. It was suppose to be a Mirror of Opposition floating near a dead-end in the Maze of the Phase Minotaur....but as Malrex pointed out---it just looks like it's a window in a castle wall---so it's probably going to get redrawn.

Regardless, it was a fun experiment in dynamic lighting range, and I was particularly pleased with the way the dungeon walls came out. (Wish I could remember how I did them!)

On the downside, the dude is not well balance and his stance is boring---I've been focusing on that a bit since then.

To be honest, I've been too busy to keep up with my practice-sketching regiment for over a month now. :(
(Miss it---probably why I'm posting...)
