    Why Assassins are awesome!!!

Very little of what is written here is even accurate so I'm not sure what edition you were reading. *Assassination as a mechanic doesn't require the use of poison. An assassin could also envenom a weapon, but assassination the mechanic only requires being in melee range while the target is...

Criteria: Evocative-Terse continuum vs. Rorschach for the referee

Fixed. Although the voice chats play a part also. I can be working on my projects and have a conversation at the same time. Not really possible with forums. That, and (tying around back to play) it seems like conversations about D&D lead to play more often than essaying about D&D, which only...

    Mechanics Cross-Pollination Thread

Have you plumbed the depths of the clarification columns in TSR periodicals before coming to this conclusion? Or are you one of the guys who rejects the idea that periodical clarifications to the text are valid?

You wouldn’t ever buy a 10 gp replacement helm, no. [edit - if you could match metal armor with leather helmets without penalty] A 10 gp replacement helm is built into the AC of expensive metal armors, because it’s an expensive metal helmet that must be forged instead of hides or cloth that is...

IDK what to tell people who want to latch on to wording and interpret it in counter-intuitive ways. The head armoring added to the suit of armor is meant to convey the purchase of armor comes with headgear. If you think everyone who buys leather armor for 5 gp then has to go buy a 10 gp...

If there's one thing using the urban random encounter chart, and the various "men" groups in the wilderness, have taught me in AD&D, it's that there's a lot more high level characters floating around than most people's mental baseline.

I don't think there's a set % granulated to that degree. The set % of my campaign will vary from your campaign, and people will self-sort to campaigns that match their personal %. D&D is intended to feature all three pillars, but some people prefer a spicy dish to a savory one. you have the...

I must disagree with Squeen here. Tactical combat is as much a pillar of D&D as is exploration and wonder. The game is a mix of all three. Something derived from war gamers was not attempting to downplay combat. Saying the game is lost if combat is strongly emphasized makes as little sense...

Presumably a price for helmet, small was included because at least a few people lost their helmets when taking them off for the various reasons the game says a helmet must be removed to function, and the inevitable question followed. But yes, armor comes with a helmet (small). (And the helmet...

The book cost of armor includes a basic helm. Why increase the book cost? Yes, Gygax put a rule in to address something happening at his table. Clearly the players felt taking off helmets was a good risk/reward. So his table perhaps played differently than someone else's. Just as you aren't...

The DMG tells you it's intended only for those wearing literal armor, but the DM may choose to extend it (this is however, "off-label", and the DM is on their own).

The 1E books aren't meant to detail the world, they're meant to detail the material the players will interact with. We're not told how specifically elves make permanent magic items, but we're given examples of permanent magic items they make, in the DMG.

    B/X differences

Anytime the math curve materially changes for likely actions/choices it is appropriate to draw a line between one era and the next. Whether an adventure is compatible with multiple math curves expressed as rules is irrelevant, as is whether or not it seems to read very similarly as text.

I'm also OK with people deciding that liches are just underweight threats in 1E and were written in such a way that this was somehow missed by everyone at the time, with a meaningless-to-play detail of a phylactery mysteriously appearing in the MM entry to no real purpose. No skin off my back.

I've not used most of the TSR modules so my knowledge of them is hit-and-miss. I don't recall any liches as the centerpiece of a module, more that (like in D2) they were just around to encounter. But nothing about that precludes the phylactery as described in Dragon. Interpreting it as the...

It may have been in a module, or additional commentary in various TSR products. I know this wasn't something new in 2E. Edit - Blueprint for a Lich article by Lakofka in Dragon 26. So this clarification was put out very shortly after the MM was published, and by someone in the TSR inner...

This is for magic items that are phylacteries. A lich's phylactery is hidden, and if its not found the lich can't be permanently killed. It's like a vampire's coffin. They're supposed to be incredibly hard to find. Not sitting in a big room waiting for you to stake them through as in...

    The state of Post-OSR content

1:1 time is for DMs who have one campaign no matter how many player groups are playing in it at the same time. "At the same time" being the key term. There is one calendar for everyone, and while it can be stretched forward by individual groups it waits for none of them. It someone is DMing...
