So I was reading the Monster Manual...

Shouldn't NPCs that high level be pretty rare? Isn't that one level away from being able to cast seventh level spells? Also, if you follow the PHB to the letter, and assume that ALL buccaneers are alignment Neutral, you have a problem, because clerics cannot be true neutral. 15th level...

So I was reading the Monster Manual...

...and came upon this interesting tidbit under the Men - Buccaneer entry: For every 50 buccaneers there is a 15% chance for a cleric of 12th. 13th. 14th. or 15th level and a 10% chance for a magic-user of 6th. 7th, or 8th level. Wait, what? If you encounter 300 buccaneers there's a...

    Advise on Running G1

Also, don't forget that the chief has a pet cave bear that will be in his room with him. That should complicate things a bit. Look at room 7 (the room of the chief's wife), according to Gary the cave bears can smell the PCs and will attack immediately.

    Advise on Running G1

Interesting. Every group I've run through the module decides to go in through one of the chimneys. I say let them do the assassination, if they are lucky enough. They'll think the threat is gone but you can keep the threat active, especially if you intend to use it as part of the GDQ series...

5e - why you think it sucks, and why you're wrong

FYI Bryce's most recent review (The Pallid Fields) looks like it's meant for a Kingmaker style game, using OSE rules. I have no idea if it's any good. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/285992/Domain-Building?manufacturers_id=7216 On the plus side it's PWYW.

Four. I pronounce it as if it's Spanish.

    Introductory Adventure Covers

What? On the Mines of Bloodstone cover?

    Introductory Adventure Covers

Not really. I love this module to death (it's the first module I ever bought) but 11 year old me definitely didn't learn how to run a game from it.

    The state of Post-OSR content

I suppose it was a change from setting based adventures to plot based adventures that marked the change from 'classic' to traditional. The character based adventures came even later.

    The state of Post-OSR content

What's that called again? Choice paralysis or something like that. If you have too many choices you find yourself unable to choose.

    The state of Post-OSR content

It's probably the fault of Weis and Hickman. But also, like you I had times where finding good, stable gaming groups was hard. People were too busy with college, or going out into the real world. I desperately wanted to play higher level stuff, and it was hard to get a group to level that...

    Site Information--Ranked Categories?

Yeah, those are supposed to denote the character level that the module is appropriate for. They have nothing to do with how good the module is.

    Dyson's maps suck

I've heard...RUMORS...that DP and Squeen are the same person.

    Dyson's maps suck

Yes. And to tell you the truth I had to look at the beginning of the thread because DP is at the top of tab 3 and I thought this was probably his doing. But it was not.

    Dyson's maps suck

This thread is amusing. I looked at the beginning and saw that I actually just used the second of the two example Dyson maps that @Two orcs pointed out in post #2.

Sword & Sorcery Adventures and Campaigns

Interesting. I didn't realize that Fritz Leiber coined the term in 1961. I have a feeling that you people(tm) probably could've saved some time by looking up Sword and Sorcery on Wikipedia. I remember an editorial in Dragon magazine about Low vs. High Fantasy, and from what I remember about...

    General Discussion

On a related note, monsters shouldn't necessarily have a better chance to hit you just because they have higher hit dice. This came home to in the back of the 3.0 Monster Manual II with the titanic toad.

    B/X differences

I'm going by memory here, but I think it was 2 in 6 when actively searching for a secret door and 3 in 6 when actively searching for a concealed door. Add that to the elven resistance to sleep and charm and it made them a must have race. I'm sure @squeen probably banished them as a 'candy race'.

    B/X differences

Wasn't it 1 in 6 chance of detected concealed doors by autodetection only? <stuck up rules elitist> It would help if you had read the rules before trying to play the game. </stuck up rules elitist>

    B/X differences

Did B/X do training? I don't think they did, so in this case it's not a problem.
