So Much Bad Design...

But it's simple really. I just want to be free to call it as I see it. Others may or may not agree (which is fine and healthy), but if you are going to mock me, or try to silence me---I'll tell you to piss off.

It's not an attack if my perceptions do not align with your tastes. Feel free to dismiss them. I won't go after you personally...but it's also not my problem if you take it personally.

Why has nobody written a basic "How to Play D&D" manual yet? Why do we collectively sit on our hands while we wait for someone like Bryce to finally scrape together his book/Bible of adventure design? Has nobody else taken a proper stab at it? [snip]

Honestly, the most in-depth "proper example" I've seen was the bit in the AD&D DMG where the party gets pwned by a ghoul, and that's hardly a detailed walkthrough. Has there really been no advancement on this front since?

I taught an after-school program in the early/mid 80s for kids, to teach them how to play D&D, and semi-recently ran across my notes and handouts from that. I’ll pull them out again to see if they hold up or not.

I also combined two of TSR’s “what is D&D?” handouts from the early 80s into a single 11x17 handout usable as an intro for newbies (I think I did this when teaching Ethan’s friends how to play in middle school, perhaps). I liked that, will dig those up too.

The examples of play over the years are actually pretty instructive, and I’m sure designing one to include mapping and resource usage/allocation would go a long way toward helping newcomers to the older/OSR editions help to understand and appreciate the value of such activities at the table.

I’m really not too sure they’ll have a lot useful in them, but I’ll dig in and see.

I've gotta say; I've been getting involved in after school programs at my kids school, and I'd be pretty interested to see what you've got as well...
