Sadly, I was surprised to learned today that the artist Karl Kopinski had a stroke about a month ago and is recovering but unable to draw.

His Go Fund Me page:

Wonderfully skilled, inspirational artist. Young, too. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

A Kopinski inspired goat-head. The gal's just the usual nonsense (maybe it's her Killer Goat familiar).

I start with pencil. Sometimes I ink it with either a marker (of wide variety) or, if I'm feeling serious, a dip pen. Only on rare occasions do I use a brush or brush-pen. For me, a brush always results in far more areas of solid black because it kind of grabs me.

Only after I have taken a photo with my phone do I clean it up in GIMP...with a simple mouse! Fixing exposure (always), using an overlay layer to darken/lighten areas (the camera never takes a consistent tone). Using white to digitally add white highlights is also a common usage.

I would love to be all analog, but try not to get too hung up about it because once its scanned it I see errors and then there's almost no going back.

Throughout the whole process I am the epitome of lazy. Not bothering to erase pencil, clean up smudges etc. I'm sure the lack of discipline shows, but it's just a hobby, and I think of what I'm posting here as a sketchbook while I'm learning the craft. A record of the journey.

You are correct, it's getting harder to tell what is digital, and what is not.

Should be playing D&D instead
GIMP 3 is a big deal. Non destructive future is now!

Drawing tablets have gotten so cheap I might try one!

Krita is more drawing specific but they are another great team too. Might dip my toes in.

My friend has a paper like screen on an ipad with Procreate. I think most Japanese artists use Clip Studio now over Photoshop which is very promising.

That said it is a vicious cycle. Good on you for choosing the ethical path GO GO GIMP

I am reminded of this great video for us boomers who remember Flash before Adobe.

Female nude. No reference, just basic muscle-construction. Toned paper, pencil and white ink. Probably the most anatomically proportional female I'm managed to pull off to date, especially in the abdomen and hips. Needed some clothes and a sharper pencil.

Work-In-Progress with working title "Breakfast for the Sacrificial Wyrm".

Two timed-elapsed photos of the pencils (with some necessary exposure corrections in GIMP) saved as a GIF for those who enjoy seeing the sausage-making. I am fantasizing that I'll be able to ink it and somehow preserve the general light/dark values without resorting to a grey-wash.
