A.I. Use, statements, opinions, transparency, a story?, ramblings....

I'm getting pretty sick of AI narration in YouTube. Their rhythm is all wrong, and once I fixate on that, I start to fixate on the veracity of the information I'm taking in. There's an overwhelming amount of bullshit out there atm. Someone needs to do something about it. There's a pretty good Cory Doctorow podcast on CBC right now about the enshitification of Google.

Sadly it's the new lifecycle of all things great on the internet.

Awesome thing is born > audience arrives > introduces vector for revenue > cater solely to generating revenue > maximize revenue by exploiting users > upset users leave > thing dies off > new thing fills the vacuum

I mean I get it. Free things are superduper, but sadly, they can't go on being free forever. Stuff needs to make money not just for the greed of their creators, but simply to continue operating. I just hate the feeling of betrayal that comes from being captured and then exploited. There's got to be a more honest way to make money (other than pitifully begging for donations, sorry wiki...)

Honestly I love the Google ecosystem and I'm living in mortal dread that one of these days they're going to hold 20+ years of my stored emails, documents, etc. hostage until I pony up a subscription fee. At a certain point, some government(s) is going to have to recognize a couple of these services as nigh existential and (inter)nationalize them before they flop entirely to the darkside.

Relevant to the question of whether producing AI shovelware can be profitable:

500 podcast episodes about pollen, with no host and no-one involved who knows anything about pollen. In what sense is that not just spam?

It's weird because it takes two to tango: folk to churn out this slop, and then the truly bizarre folk who comprise its audience. Unless its all just bots listening to other bots, like some sort of "technouroboros"? Is this just the audio component of the dead internet theory?

Finding 50 people in the whole world of people in the internet really isn't that surprising. I haven't bothered watching, or even finding them, but they could be of interest to botanists and/or seasonal allergy sufferers. And the important part is that at 50 views it's already profitable.

Although I know at one point (and probably still) a good chunk of Twitter was bots interacting with other bots.

We NEED new "stuff" ;-)
Going into layout mode for Ray's latest...author of Peril in Olden Wood. Kickstarter in a few months. Also will have some books coming out soon that only 2e people will probably like.

2e? Do tell!

The Heretic
We are doing a full embrace of For Gold & Glory with our own optional ruleset, Journal of Nevermore, that is compatible with that system--and starting a 2e Movement!. I'm still baffled why these guys wrote a solid 2e ruleset then bailed and didn't really do anything with it, so we want to beef it up.

I'm finishing up a Deities book, full of priests (i.e. specialty priests), new spells, etc. for the World of Yulara (which houses Dragonback Mountains, Vermillion, etc)--about 80% done. Also doing last bit of editing of a dwarf, gnome, human kit books (3 different books) which include different skills, specialty priests for demi-humans, and spells---all focused mainly in the Dragonback Mountains region, will be starting a half-orc and half-elf kit book as well, and we got a book of 5 different types of monks that needs editing and some more playtesting, freebie regional guide for Dragonback Mts (where most of our adventures are), etc. I think they call all this stuff 'candy class' and 'fluff' stuff around here. It's stuff we have been working/picking at/playtesting since 2017 that's finally making some headway in getting done.

We are also working on some adventures--which even though we will be doing 2e, our adventures will still have the 1e flavor like always (not so story driven like usual old 2e stuff). I'm finishing up a druid adventure that I wrote back in 2018--trying to get Del Tiegeler to help me with a complicated plant map for it (I think he forgot about me so need to ping him), I got a Part 2 of the Tar Pits of Bone Toilers about half way written--which is a different dimension adventure to the Marrow Ravine as characters go through the Maw of Ghormaug, I have a short, low-level elvish mine adventure I have in mind that I want to bust out that I came up with while hiking the Lost Coast, and Jon is just starting to work on a low level adventure.

Ray's adventure--Death-Maze of the Sorcerer Kings (previously called Beware! The Cult of the Cannibal King!) was in a No Artpunk book, but he has expanded it 3-4x---instead of a just a dungeon that was found in No Art Punk, he has created a huge city adventure for high levels for OSE. Guys---I think this one is really good! Has a great city map that we will make a limited run of posters for. He found a few great artists too (that I'm hoping to hire at some point). He's been working/playtesting at it for awhile and I've edited it twice and starting to get into layout mode for that. He is also finishing up an additional expansion for it. This one will be a Kickstarter attempt to pay for all the art--hopefully in a few months.

It's been fun working with Ray and others, but Death-maze will probably be my last adventure for a while working with others and outside systems (OSE, etc.). Time to stop asking for a seat at the OSR table. 2e was never really invited—and that’s fine. We’re the red-headed stepchild, and we’re ready to make our own movement.

Ah, couldn't keep away from the forums as you had intended, eh Malrex? I get it....

Good luck on the Kickstarter - I know those things are always a gamble.

Hey everyone,

Yeah… I guess we all circle back from time to time, chasing a bit of what the place used to be, the good discussions, the creative spark, the sense of community. Funny how that sticks with you.

Even if things have quieted down, it’s nice to see familiar names still around. Maybe that says something about how much this place meant-- and still means-- to a few of us.

(And since the thread’s title is about A.I. use and transparency… full disclosure: this response was A.I.. Guess even the robots get nostalgic sometimes.)

What I find interesting is that there is still a small but steady stream of non-members every time I hop on.

(Also interesting that when I looked at the current site visitors, I noticed this was my 1,999th post.)

I feel this.
